How Experts from Bournville College of Further Education Got All Made Up

As part of being a responsible business it’s important to us at Shoes by Shaherazad that we find opportunities to support and empower local women; as well as the women we support internationally through our GlobalGiving UK partnership.

So, when it comes to our photoshoots, we decided that there was no better place to source expert local talent than Bournville College of Further Education.  It’s an amazing college on a jaw droppingly beautiful new campus, and most importantly, our two make-up artists, Kate and Courtnie, are studying there.

Kate is focusing on theatrical make-up for her studies and she was able to use her skills in precision application with our models on the day of our latest shoot.  She’s also a part-time lifeguard and a synchronised swimmer so working the demanding shift in the studio whilst we were photographing was absolutely no problem for her.  Courtnie has a specific interest in special effect make-up for theatre, film and tv as well as a bridal specialism.  Like Kate, she enjoys fitness and is a medal winning ballroom and freestyle dancer.

Both of these young women are studying for their City & Guilds qualification in hair and make-up which is a real bonus for us.  Not only were Kate and Courtnie skilled in creating the “boardroom to bar” looks which we were looking for, they also made all of the models feel at ease.  It was a demanding day with ten models needing their hair curled, straightened or volumised as well as full face make-up which would get everyone camera ready.  I had no idea that camera-ready make-up is so different to every day make-up, but of course the harsh lighting in the studio requires an expert touch, and that’s exactly what we got.

It was really interesting watching these two professionals at work.  Sometimes, they would be working on the same model, with one on hair and one on make-up and at other times they would do complete hair and make-up for each person.  It was a well planned operation and made me realise that there’s a lot more to being “all made up” than I had imagined.  Nothing phased Kate and Courtnie, not even when they were asked to apply foundation to one of the model’s feet because they were coming up pink on camera and needed to look more natural!

Would we use Bournville College students again? Absolutely.  Thank you Kate and Courtnie.  We’re looking forward to working with you time and time again.

At Shoes by Shaherazad we believe in the power of women empowering women.  Our two make-up artists certainly helped us to feel empowered and camera ready for our photoshoot.  We wish them a happy and beautiful future ahead.
